Define the result in dimensions
‘Trim the hedge’ can mean a light seasonal shaping, restoring straight faces, reducing height, opening a walkway or reclaiming width from a driveway. Use measurements, photos and fixed property features to agree on the result.
A severely overgrown hedge may not have enough live green growth behind the desired cut line. In that case, phased work or a less aggressive target may preserve a better appearance than one deep cut.
Cedar hedges and shrubs need different treatment
Different species respond differently to old-wood cuts, timing and repeated shearing. The scope should identify the hedge or shrub type where possible and separate formal shearing from selective shrub pruning.
Trees growing through a hedge, dead sections, vines and major restoration may need a separate decision instead of being hidden inside a standard trimming price.
Access, nesting and cleanup
Share both sides of the hedge, gates, slopes, pools, fences, utilities and neighbour access. Active nests and wildlife obligations can change the timing or area that can be worked safely and lawfully.
Confirm whether clippings are removed, whether the top and both faces are included and how debris is protected from gardens, roofs, vehicles and neighbouring property.
